About Profe
Welcome and thank you for taking time to interact with my online teaching portfolio!
My name is Allisson Fernanda Restrepo Schnee and I am a current doctoral student of Hispanic linguistics with a minor in applied linguistics at Texas Tech University. I am a Spanish heritage speaker, meaning that I grew up in a very small town in Kansas, raised by two immigrant parents from Colombia, where I learned to communicate and interact both Spanish and English languages.
In my early years, I often experienced a lack of representation and appreciation for my Hispanic community, where I grew up. I spent most of my life feeling like I did not belong in the only place I knew to call home. That was until, I was immersed in heritage language classrooms held at my university. In these classes I was exposed to cultural topics related to my community, introduced to experiences of peers that had similar upbringings as I, and I was given an outlet to advocate and reconnect with my heritage culture. I knew then and there, that I wanted to spend the rest of my life helping others not only learn about the language but also gain a deeper understanding of their identity as a language learner learning to express their multilingualism. I hope to one day demonstrate to other individuals, who may have felt similarly disconnected, how one can enhance their linguistic knowledge while remaining authentic to their identity and heritage.
Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to have led and instructed several Spanish classes, ranging from Kindergarten-12th grades through foundational university-level courses. In the future, I aspire to pursue a position as a professor in higher education.
